    ORTHOPAEDIC & HAND SURGEON

    MBCHB, FRCS, FRACS


    Michael graduated from the University of Otago in 1986 and completed his orthopaedic training in New Zealand in 1996. He then spent 12 years overseas completing further training in hand surgery,  5 years in Australia in 7 years the United States primarily in research and teaching positions at Universities. Prior to returning to New Zealand, he was the chief of hand surgery at the University of Kentucky, USA.

    He continues with University appointments in medical education and biomechanics at the University of Auckland. He has a particular interested in the function of the forearm and clinical problems relating to the ulnar wrist and distal radio-ulnar joint. He is happy to see patients with any  problem from the elbow to the hand.

    Mandy qualified from The London Hospital UK in 1985 with a BSc(Hons)Physiotherapy. After gaining general experience in large teaching hospitals in the UK, she specialised in manual therapy and sport medicine. Mandy was the Senior Physiotherapist at the Cambridge University Sports Clinic for several years. In this time, she worked with many national sports teams and was involved in medical research.

     

    When she moved to NZ in 1990 she ran her own private practice working with all areas muscular skeletal injuries. In this time she supervised both under graduate and post graduate students from the AUT. Now with post graduate qualifications in Hand Therapy, Manual Therapy, and Acupuncture she enjoys working in the specialised area of upper limb injury and dysfunction.

    Chantal graduated as a Physiotherapist from Auckland University of Technology in 2008. Thereafter she gained experience as a private practice musculoskeletal physiotherapist then went on to a rotational physiotherapy programme at Middlemore Hospital where she covered various areas of rehabilitation for 5 years. During this time Chantal developed a passion for Hand Therapy and worked 2 years in both the Hand Therapy and Burns & Plastics departments, and part time at The Hand Institute. She completed the Hand and Upper Limb Therapy module at AUT in 2012 and her Post Graduate Certificate in Rehabilitation in 2013.

    After traveling the world with her partner for 2 years, Chantal returns to our clinic to follow her passion for hand and upper limb rehabilitation, with an outlook on future studies within this area.

    Nick is a registered Physiotherapist and Associate Hand Therapist, and comes to us as one of the top graduates from Auckland University of Technology's physiotherapist program. He is interested in all aspects of hand and arm rehabilitation, and is passionate about keeping up to date with the latest evidence-based treatment techniques so as to ensure the highest possible level of care for all patients. He is currently pursuing post-graduate studies in upper limb rehabilitation at AUT. 

     

    As an enthusiastic rock-climber Nick has special interest in acute injuries to the hand and forearm, and the management of these within the context of continuing training.

    ASSOCIATE HAND THERAPIST

     

    Vireshni is an associate hand therapist and the newest member of the Hand Institute Team. She graduated from Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in 2003 and has been working as an occupational therapist for over 12 years.  Vireshni has enjoyed working in rehabilitation settings for several years and is enthusiastic about upper limb rehabilitation.  She has recently completed postgraduate study in relation to hand and upper limb therapy and pain management at AUT.

     

    Vireshni is interested in supporting people to engage in meaningful activities by enhancing  hand function.
